France, just before the turn of the 20th century: Always on the lookout for new talent, clown George Footit (James Thiérrée) spots Chocolat (Omar Sy), an escaped slave now touring the country with a small traveling circus. The two outsiders become friends and develop a stage show together, which quickly becomes a roaring success. And with appearances in Paris’ biggest circus tops, Footit and Chocolat end up becoming national stars.

Soon however, fame drives a wedge between the two friends and Chocolat must realize his many enemies won’t stand for the success of a black artist.

CHOCOLAT tells the true story of the rise and fall of Raphaël Padilla, the first black performer to step foot on the French stage, who under the name of Chocolat rose to fame and fortune, before losing it all.
