MY NEIGHBORHOOD CINEMA

THE DCM TEAM PRESENTS: OUR FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD CINEMAS. WE WANDER FROM PRENZLAUER BERG VIA MITTE TO TREPTOW, DISCOVERING WITH MICHÈLE, CLAUDIA AND STEFAN THEIR PERSONAL FAVORITE CINEMAS.

WHY IS IT YOUR FAVORITE CINEMA AND WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BEST CINEMA EXPERIENCE HERE?

For me, the Filmtheater am Friedrichshain is the closest Yorck Cinema – before Corona I had a membership pass that I used all the time. I loved attending afternoon screenings in cinema 1, the biggest cinema, and remember fondly seeing THE ARRIVAL, US and THE REVENANT there, because we had the cinema almost completely to ourselves. However, one of the keenest cinematic memories I have of the Filmtheater is and remains NOCTURNAL ANIMALS that I saw in gold-colored cinema 2.

WHAT DOES A PERFECT DAY WITH A VISIT TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD CINEMA LOOK LIKE?

I like meeting whoever’s coming with me to the cinema beforehand to eat an ice cream (Duo’s Siciliano Ice Cream lately) or drink a coffee somewhere nearby and then go for a long walk in the Volkspark. Just before the film starts, you can chill out on the cinema steps and wait out the adverts there. After the film, of course we’ll go for something to eat, either in the cinema’s beer garden or talk about the film over a drink. There aren’t many great places in the vicinity, but at the end of the day, it’s all about going to the cinema.

WHAT MOVIE DID YOU SEE HERE LAST?

MATTHIAS & MAXIME by Xavier Dolan at the 10pm screening – that’s definitely too late for me.

WHY IS IT YOUR FAVORITE CINEMA AND WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BEST CINEMA EXPERIENCE HERE?

The Kino International is on my way home from work, so I can hop straight into the cinema after work. But that’s not the only reason why I like this cinema so much. The International also conquered my heart architecturally with its large windows at the front, which seem to make the building almost wobble and provide a great contrast with the other buildings on Karl Marx Allee.

I’ve had lots of little special cinema experiences at the International. But above all, I remember the LA LA LAND screening, because I was there with a special someone, but also the IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK premiere with director Barry Jenkins in attendance, and finally the screening of NOMADLAND, which touched me deeply.

WHAT FILM DID YOU SEE HERE LAST?

ANOTHER ROUND at 7 pm and then an evening walk home along the beautiful Karl Marx Allee, which in summer is particularly special.

WHAT DOES A PERFECT DAY WITH A TRIP TO THE CINEMA LOOK LIKE?

The perfect day would begin for me on a Saturday at the weekend market on Boxhagener Platz with a cup of fresh coffee in one hand and a delicious croissant in the other, before catching the afternoon showing at the International. I would get there early enough to spend a little time in the cinema foyer before the film starts.

Just sitting at the large windows with a drink in my hand and watching the other cinemagoers. And then the end to my perfect cinema day would be either going to a nice little restaurant in Friedrichshain (I would recommend to everyone Cento Passi or Milja & Schäfa in Ostkreuz) or straight home to enjoy my purchases from the weekend market.

WHAT DOES A PERFECT DAY WITH A VISIT TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD CINEMA LOOK LIKE?

I could count up many different cinemas, but the one cinema that sticks in my head is the Cinestar in Treptow. And just because I spend a lot of time there with my “cinema family”. Until the start of the pandemic, we attended the sneak preview showings every two weeks.

The wonderful thing about it is that we mostly watch movies we wouldn’t otherwise watch, like FLITZER for example. But my best cinema experience – imagine just the two of you sitting in a huge cinema and watching BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY – it was absolutely electrifying.

WHAT FILM DID YOU SEE HERE LAST?

I last saw TENET here. I’m only just realizing now that I haven’t been back for over a year.

WHAT DOES A PERFECT DAY WITH A VISIT TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD CINEMA LOOK LIKE?

Traditionally, before the film, we’d go to our local Italian Da Geo and eat a delicious stone-baked pizza. Most people go there after to eat something and talk about the film, but I like chatting about our expectations of the film. The adverts and trailers are an absolute MUST for me. Once the film is over, I like to go for a walk and talk about the film, and whether it fulfilled our expectations or not.
