ALEXEI NAVALNY documentary in cinemas from May 5th, 2022

The new documentary NAVALNY from Canadian director Daniel Roher shows both harrowingly and grippingly the poisoning and attempted murder of Alexei Navalny – Russian opposition leader and President Vladimir Putin’s “Public Enemy #1”.

The film begins with undercover footage from the plane heading to Siberia in which Navalny was supposed to have been murdered with the nerve agent Novichok. And it’s only thanks to an emergency landing and transfer to the Charité Hospital in Berlin, pushed through by his wife Julia against the will of the Russian Government, that he was able to be saved.

With all the pace of a political thriller, Daniel Roher documents and accompanies Navalny during some both shocking and personal moments – from being poisoned on the airplane and his stopover in Germany up to his return to Moscow, where he is arrested at the airport upon landing on behalf of the Russian Government. Since then, Alexei Navalny has been imprisoned not far from Moscow at the notoriously harsh Pokrov correctional colony.

On March 22nd, 2022, in the middle of Russia’s war of aggression on Ukraine, Navalny’s sentence was extended with another nine years’ imprisonment, because of supposed fraud. Navalny’s lawyers have filed an appeal and are demanding his acquittal.

NAVALNY celebrated its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2022 and was awarded both the Documentary Audience Award and the Festival Favorite Award. It will celebrate its German premiere on May 4th at the DOK.fest in Munich where it will open the festival. DCM will release NAVALNY in cinemas nationwide on May 5th, 2022.
