Whether it’s for relaxation, fitness, competitions, health or just for fun, the reasons for running are just as varied as the millions of people who have discovered the sport. In the Sixties, sports enthusiasts who took their turns outside a sportsground were treated like freaks and women were even forbidden from taking part in competitions. It wasn’t until running celebrities like charismatic running rebel Steve Prefontaine, women’s rights activist Kathrine Switzer or Fred Lebow, eccentric founder of the New York Marathon, smoothed the way for the sport that it became a mass movement.
