DOLDER WELLENKINO “GRÜEZI, EVERYONE!”

“Grüezi and welcome to the Dolder Wellenkino! Your tickets, please!” It was with these words or equally friendly ones, that we greeted cinemagoers over 17 nights (between 6th and 22nd August 2021) at the Dolder Swimming Pool in Adlisberg, not far from the city of Zürich, lovingly restyled as an open-air cinema. First opened in 1934, this iconic open-air swimming pool, at about the same distance as Zürichberg, maintains a long tradition as well as its original Bauhaus style. Our Dolder Wellenkino however, which first came to life last year, is still in its early days. At DCM Switzerland, it’s been our main aim for the Dolder Wellenkino to offer an intimate and refined open-air cinema experience, characterized by personal touches and where audiences can feel at home. It follows the concept of “Small is beautiful” and with its unique open-air picnic feeling truly stands apart from other cinema events in the city. This year, again, it’s been very successful, and we’re pleased to have been able to welcome more than 4,000 guests over the more than two-week run.

Once through check-in, viewers were able to put the daily grind behind them and the Dolder Wellenkino’s relaxed and idyllic atmosphere saw any worries quickly fade away. An enormous pool in the middle of the grounds, wicker beach chairs and a gigantic lawn where cinemagoers could find a spot for the picnic blankets or loungers they’d picked up at check-in, made for a supremely relaxing film night. The evening was rounded off gastronomically with picnic baskets that could be ordered in advance at the time of ticket purchase, filled with delicious treats.

The enormous eleven-meter-wide screen stood majestically in front of the lush green trees of the neighboring forest. And once the audience had found their spots, we served up cinematic treats for them every night from a colorful mix of film classics, such as SOME LIKE IT HOT and new releases like THE FATHER, ANOTHER ROUND or THE UNITED STATES VS. BILLIE HOLIDAY. For younger viewers, there was also a family movie on Wednesdays, such as HOOK, BEETHOVEN or MY LIFE AS A COURGETTE.

To finish it off in style, we screened the in-house pre-premiere of MONTE VERITÀ – to great applause. And thanks to the previously filmed interview with director Stefan Jäger and actor Julia Jentsch, viewers were perfectly prepared for their upcoming journey back to the year 1906.

Looking back on it now, we can talk about how lucky we were with the weather – we didn’t have rain one single night, and viewers were well protected against the evening winds thanks to picnic blankets generously supplied by our partner Tchibo. For the organizers, however, including all those behind the scenes, the payoff wasn’t just the applause at the end of the Dolder Wellenkino 2021 season, but also the kind feedback and the many positive and constructive reviews we gratefully received. We’re already excited for Dolder Wellenkino 2022.
